Most of the customers who get microblading or other permanent make up are fully satisfied with results; however, for whatever reason, this is not always the case.
Clients regularly request guidance about microblading over an old treatment or an existing tattoo. If you are asked, do not panic! We may have the solution.
Why decide to cover or remove microblading?
There are a number of reasons why a client could be unhappy about their treatment. These can include:
The first thing to remember is that this is intensely personal to the client: it affects their self-esteem, which in turn can lead to depression and anxiety. Remember to think about this from the client’s point of view before reacting. Remaining calm and providing a sympathetic ear is the best way.
How to avoid a microblading fail?
If you are advising clients, the best advice to prevent any issues is to give them as much information as possible about your style. Use a ‘before and after’ portfolio, to help them understand how you work and get a feel for if the results will reflect their taste. It is better to lose a potential client before doing any work than lose them after!
In addition we suggest that if you have them, you show any advanced certificates you may have from an accredited institution to potential clients.
Finally, ensure that your clients are confident that they are getting the shape and tone they want, before starting the treatment.
If this does not work and a client is unhappy, or if a client comes to you following work done elsewhere, the question becomes: is it possible to cover the work with a new microblading treatment?
The answer is: sometimes.
Actually the truth is that not in every case is such work practicable, why may that be?
Microblading is only a solution if the previous work is very light and the ink is not deposited too deep.
If you are being asked to decide if additional treatment is possible via social media or email, ask for three pictures: one straight on and one from each side, so it is possible to see the whole tail of the eyebrow. The most important thing you should remind the prospective client is that these photos should be make-up free, filter free and taken in natural daylight.
This way, you can check if they are a good candidate or not.
If so, there are many solutions to opt for from which you can choose the best one for the job.
Colour correction for clients
The first remedy consists of implanting new pigment to improve the overall aspect: this procedure is more difficult than applying the pigment in the first place and it is often more expansive than the typical PMU treatment. The first session could cost £750.
The hardest part is about choosing the pigment colour: a light one may cause some problems. In fact sometimes it could leave traces of unwanted pigment and it is often invisible to many types of laser, so that kind of removal may be hard or, worse, impossible in the future.
This type of procedure is quite risky because you do not know how the two pigments will work together and is more suggested for those who have darker skin or hair.
Shading technique
The second alternative consists of a procedure that takes about 2 to 3 hours. It is similar to microblading, but gives a soft shaded brow pencil look, by offering a great definition and depth to brows.
The results obtained with the shading may last from 1 to 3 years.
Combo
The last but not least option is called combo and merges the best of the two microblading and microshading worlds.
In fact this is a mixture of hairstroke and ombre effect techniques, useful to obtain more defined brows. It helps to achieve a realistic look, by filling in sparse areas of brow with fine strokes and then give the eyebrows the desired level of definition.
When microblading is not possible
Its not always possible to use microblading, it happens when the PMU pigment is deposited too deep and provokes a darker shadow: this is very difficult to cover because the artist will not be able to create a natural look and you would not see the hairstrokes.
Another difficult fix is the shape: in fact it is very difficult to recreate the perfect shape when the permanent make up is outside of the outline where it’s supposed to be.
In addition this treatment is not suggested to those who have a too dark tattoo: this would mean adding more pigment over the current colour making it even more bold and dark.
So, what to do in these cases? Don’t worry here are some solutions:
Laser
The best solution to deal with a microblading or tattoo fail is to proceed with a laser removal.
This service is often only provided by a doctor or licensed medical practitioner and it is very expansive, they could charge about £280 to £500 per session.
Through this process the laser will break up the colour into smaller particles, allowing them to be absorbed by the immune system.
Saline removal
An excellent alternative to laser is saline removal.
It is usually provided by doctors or medi-spa professionals and, sometimes, PMU technicians.
It consists of tattooing a sterile salt water solution into the previously tattooed area to remove the pigment from the skin. This works by using the salt to break up the pigment, allowing it to exit slowly up to the surface of the skin.
This type of treatment is cheaper and more suitable for the eye area. In addition it is less painful than laser due to the use of numbing agents.
